SSFF & ASIA began in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1999. Each year, the festival receives more than 9,000 short films created by maestros and emerging talents in over 140 countries/regions. In 2004, it was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the short film categories of the annual Academy Awards®. With the continued support from George Lucas, it has now become one of the largest short film festivals in Asia, as well as the only Oscar-qualifying short film festival in Japan. SSFF & ASIA is a gateway for young filmmakers to take their first steps into the film industry.
Traditional communication strategies become less effective in forming consumer engagement. As the way we communicate changes, an increasing number of companies are breaking into movie marketing. “Branded movies” are especially unique in that they are committed to produce value for consumers with the power of storytelling and entertainment while reflecting on a brand’s philosophies and ideas. SSFF & ASIA launched BRANDED SHORTS in 2016 to introduce successful branded works.
SSFF & ASIA has built a network of more than 50,000 filmmakers/creators and production companies that it has collaborated with over the 19 years, and another network of ad agencies and clients that it has started collaborated with as the launch of BRANDED SHORTS. The festival aims to connect these four parties and boost each business. Addition to the international short film festival, we aim to create the possibility of short film while consolidating its position as the only international festival for advertising works in Japan.
